Thanks, Brian. Just discovered something. A PDF from another system
printed fine. I think the only affected PDFs are those created from
LaTeX files according to the following command:

dvipdfm -o '%B.pdf' '%B.dvi'

(where %B is the base filename, of course)

My system apparently has other "dvipdf" binaries:

dvipdf
dvipdfm
dvipdfmx
dvipdft

I don't have time at the moment to try them, but perhaps another will
work.

Any other thoughts, after reading this new information?
