dvipdfm speaks some '\special' extensions to the DVI format.I can't find a
manual,
but apparently dvipdfmx is a further-extended version of dvipdfm. dvipdft
generates thumbnails. Have you tried using dvips to generate postscript?
(This is
what dvipdf uses, at least on my system, as the first half of the PDF
conversion
process)
