Fedora and other distributions don't include software to play videos, mp3s
and other media files for a few reasons:
- Some codecs are patent-encumbered. If Fedora distributed code to
decode mp3 files they might need to pay royalties or risk leaving
themselves (or their customers) open to lawsuits.
- Other media formats have no open-source implementation. Some of these
projects (mplayer and others) actually hook into Windows DLL files taken
from software programs that read these media files (for instance Real
Player). Fedora and others would face lawsuits if they distributed this
stuff without permission.
Just so you understand why that software isn't included in Fedora,
