  Those distros you're using are really, really old.  Learning linux
  
  from books is also not a good idea, as books are often out of date by
  
  the time they get published.  I would recommend trying the latest
  
  versions of those distros you were talking about.  When looking for
  
  help, online forums and Google are typically good sources of help.  If
  
  your hardware is really old, you also might try some smaller distros
  
  like DSL or Puppy.
