Ed,

I use Kaffeine and QJoypad. QJoypad allows me to use my PlayStation 2
controller I have hooked up to my computer as a remote, a mouse, etc...
It simulates button presses from other devices. I can send you my
layouts, if you want to try that route. Also, VLC will play some formats
that the other ones can't, so keep VLC around for them.
