"Support" means both security updates and package repository hosting; after the 18 months of support the official repository is taken offline. A repository archives project exists but you'll have to edit /etc/apt/sources.list to use it (a simple find/replace).

However, it's only been 6 months since 9.10 was released. You still have a full year prepare for the upgrade, and to choose either 10.04, 10.10, or 11.04 to upgrade to. If you don't want to upgrade this box very often I recommend moving to 10.04 (not immediately, but sometime) because LTS releases have longer support periods.

it appears that "support" will last for 18 months from the date it was
released.  But what exactly does "support" mean?  Does it mean that
after the 18 months, if security vulnerabilities are found and patched
in software on my system, I will be unable to update Ubuntu?  In other
words, will Canonical completely quit providing updated packages after
the 18 months?

I'm not eager to upgrade my production machine from 9.10 to 10.04 (LTS).
But ultimately I may have no choice, if indeed Canonical will quit
providing security updates :(

Can someone clue me in here?
