In the interest of making progress, we have acquired a machine from
Surplus. This came at no cost to the LUG, because Dr. Freeh hooked us
up with a departmental transfer. Dr. Freeh has also arranged for us to
house the machine in a server room near his office. Thanks, Dr. Freeh!
The machine is an old Gateway workstation with a 40GB HDD, 2GB RAM,
and a 3.0GHz P4 processor.
These specs allow us to do many of the things we're interested in,
such as host websites and persistent screen sessions. We will not get
to provide an on-campus package repository with 40GB, nor will we be
able to provide users with completely isolated operating environments
a la virtual machines.
This machine will let us evaluate how satisfied the LUG is with the
limits of free. The SC will be come up with cost estimates for a
better machine, and a budget, so we have concrete numbers to talk
about if the Surplus machine doesn't work out.
