Rar files are kinda a hot debate topic.  There is a free and open source unrar tool.

The guys that wrote it had more than enough understanding to make it 'rar' as well as 'unrar', but decided to instead advise that if Linux users need to compress files, use a free and open format (bzip2 or gzip).  Their tool is for the 'unfortunate' case that you get handed a RAR file :-P

You could reverse-engineer it to make it 'rar', but wheres the fun in that

So since this is open source, i'm kinda with Ed on this.  Grab the sources and build against whatever glibc you have.  And i'd check the forums/irc.

Are you using RHEL 5? Fedora? one of the realmkits? if this is a realmkit, maybe send the question off to the RealmKit list.  I think there *should* be a better solution than build the sources, but at least you know that'll work.
