Bumping up to the latest released version of the distro you choose to
use is certainly a good idea. For example, you pointed out Red Hat 7.1,
Fedora 9 would probably be the distro you'd want to look into installing
if you stuck with a RedHat based distro. Online forums are your friends
because you can search them. What applications are you having issues
with? You can search the online forums to see if anyone else is having
the same issues you are having and chances are good that you will be
able to find a fix or workaround that you can replicate.
