Eh, I'd just go with Ubuntu. Add the "Medibuntu" repository, and you'll have the computer playing DVD's in no time. Personally, I prefer the KDE4 spin.

If that's not your cup of tea, look at the programs XBMC, Boxee, or Elisa. You can install these on top of Ubuntu and configure Ubuntu to automatically run them on boot.
