Yep, forums and hardware compatibility guides -- such as Ubuntu's HCL < http://www.ubuntuhcl.org/ > -- are a big help. If you're having a hard time with a piece of hardware, it is okay to flip $50 for the card that's known to work. My Frankenchine at home runs Ubuntu and consists of both old hardware (accumulated from the NCSU surplus sales) and new hardware from newegg.
What's the machine your using?

Those distros you're using are really, really old. Learning linux
from books is also not a good idea, as books are often out of date by
the time they get published. I would recommend trying the latest
versions of those distros you were talking about. When looking for
help, online forums and Google are typically good sources of help. If
your hardware is really old, you also might try some smaller distros
like DSL or Puppy.
