Are we (read: ncsu) migrating to Groupwise? thats news to me. I've not
run into it in a course yet.

The faculty (even across a single dept) can be so scattered about
calendaring and email, students basically have to constantly check all
of these sources:
Webmail (just email)
WebCT/Blackboard/Vista (which has its own chat, email, and calendaring)
WebAssign (which also has its own messaging and calendar)
Moodle (same)
other misc. services teachers decide to use for class (google calendar etc.)

As for Thunderbird, the only shortcoming I've run into is trying to
run it on several different computers out of the same (network) home
directory. Things get messy, and it loses its mind. There is a
workaround, just know it's dangerous. (And if one of the instances
goes down in flames it can and will probably take the rest with it).

(Basically you just nuke the lock file...)
