Ubuntu is reported to work with SATA drives on the nForce 4 setups,
though I don't know about raid.

If your final goal is a hpc cluster and are having this much trouble
with installing a distro I would be sure to check out the OSCAR
project http://oscar.openclustergroup.org/.
