During this talk, I will describe HPC - what it is, what it is used for. I'll introduce the Henry2 cluster , a Linux based cluster with almost 1000 compute nodes of various models and memory, different interconnects and over 50 GPUs. I will keep that short, and then focus on the users of the cluster. LUG group uses Linux because they like to, but HPC users use Linux because they have to. I will describe some of the challenges our users face to get up to speed with Linux for the purposes of research computing. Then I will pitch a proposal to LUG, as a potential outreach project, some of the things LUG might help HPC users with. This could include basic 'using Linux' support, but more important is the need to help transition users away from their GUI based and often proprietary software to using open source command line software. I'll explain why it is difficult to install software on a shared resource, and how LUG could possibly assist users to create Docker/Singularity containers. I will try to make the talk as brief as possible to maximize time for Q/A.
