Subject: Call 1654695: IPv6 rollout timeline
To: ehanders@ncsu.[redacted]
We negotiated an IPv6 block with our ISP NCREN and were unsatisfied
with the amount of space that they were going to allocate to NCSU ( a
/48 ). I have since written a large justification document to ARIN
and have received a direct /32 allocation that the university can use
going forward.
We have recently upgraded our network backbone and are now ready for
IPv6 but at this point still need to work with our ISP to announce our
prefix and test internally before offering this as a service.
In addition, our IP Address Managment (IPAM) system (currently QIP)
does not support IPv6 and is in the process of being replaced with a
new system from BlueCat that is IPv6 aware. I do not see us handing
out IPv6 blocks to groups on campus until we have the IPAM replacement
deployed as there would be no scalable enterprise way of managing the
space for the community.
I see us starting to use IPv6 for a few special test customers this
calendar year if everything goes as planned.
Thanks --Will
