Thanks everyone for the responses..
This is my foot in mouth moment.. Turns out the issue was in how I had terminated my Ethernet cabling. On the router side it was terminated as 568B config and on the PC side I erroneously terminated it with 568A.
With that fix, everything worked out fine.

Thanks for all the input.. turns out the user and not ubuntu was to blame here.

Thanks
Rahul

I believe that ifconfig and friends have been replaced by 'ip' and friends.  (Probably ifconfig is available in an optional package.) This article seems to have a list of old utilities and their equivalent new utilities:

Dmesg had some entries from the Realtek driver.. Something about the link going down and up... Nothing more than that..
Also, I cannot use most of the tools mentioned in the guide, because I cannot do apt-get install because of lack of internet..
I will try to get the Deb files and see if I can install from a USB stick..
Thanks
Rahul

Check dmesg. Have you tried manually editing the file??

Hey Guys,

I recently built a desktop and flashed Ubuntu(17.04) on it.

For some reason I am not able to get ethernet working on it. I have tried most the network manager hacks on the internet but with no success.

To add to the woes, the machine is currently not connected to internet and the ubuntu cli didn't have basic tools like ifconfig/ethtool  installed.

The details of the build is as follows:

Computer Type: Custom Desktop build.

GPU:MSI - GeForce GT 710 2GB Video Card

CPU:AMD - Ryzen 5 1400 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor.

Motherboard: MSI - B350 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard.

RAM: Crucial - 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4-2133.

PSU:
Thermaltake - VO545A1N2U ATX Mid Tower Case w/450W Power Supply. SSD: Silicon power 120GB SSD 3D NAND HDD: WD Blue 500 GB Internal HDD ‑ 3.5" ‑ WD5000AAKS Operating System & Version: Ubuntu 17.04

Chipset Drivers: Whatever came with the board. Nothing new installed Background Applications: NA

Ethernet adapter: realtek 8169 I believe.

Any Help will be greatly appreciated. Its a shame that in this day and age, a fresh Ubuntu build does not work out of the box :(
