802.11a isn't all that "new" ... Why are they only now deciding to support it?

Campus used to reserve 802.11a for classroom use not for the general public.  That is a professor would

roll out laptops with 802.11a cards that could then join that network and use that network. Part of the "new" thing is that

802.11a is now being opened up as a  "public" network  and advertised for everyone to use instead of being reserved

for things on rolling carts etc...

So yes the tech is not new but how we are using it now is.
