We had a great meeting today at CrazyFire. The food was excellent as
always, and we got a lot of good planning done. To summarize:
- Upcoming meetings:
* 9/23 Virtualization - Closer to the "Cloud" - This meeting is to
explore the current state of virtualization, with a stress on software
virtualization in Linux, and what it can do. If you are curious about
how to run Windows "In a Box", then this is the activity for you. Also
covered will be the idea of "Cloud Computing".
* 10/7 Gaming on Linux with WINE
* 10/21 Getting AFS installed on your linux box to access and sync
with your unity account
* 11/1 Installfest - Bring your computer to get linux installed, get
help fixing problems, or volunteer to help
* 11/3 Un-presentation - Prepare your own 5-15 minute presentation
and bring it to the meeting. We'll vote on what we think is most
interesting, and the winners present!
* 11/18 Movie night - Hackers. We'll be watching this classic 80s
movie starring Jonny Lee Miller and Angelina Jolie. Very unrealistic,
and extremely funny. We're hoping to use the new movie theater that's
being built in the library.
* If you have meeting ideas or would like to present a topic, please
let us know! We'd love to have your input.
- We are searching for a new room on Centennial campus to hold our LUG
meetings. With better parking, better access, better projectors, and
pretty much better everything, it's hard to find a reason to stay in
Cox400. Thanks to Adam Mondl for taking charge of that.
- Installfest will be held on Saturday, November 1 in Harrelson G108.
This follows the release of Ubuntu 8.10, which is set to be released
on 10/30. Daniel Marcus and Michael Grudziecki will be helping with
advertising for this event and communicating with other groups to help
get this out to a wider audience. In order to prepare for the
installfest, we need to start advertising, reserve the room, verify
that Jack Neely can have the NCSU linux mirror up to date with the
latest linux distro releases, and set up a DHCP server that we can use
in the lab.
- The LUG will be applying for funding from the UAB in order to
provide food at activities like Installfests, LUG t-shirts, event
advertising, etc.
- We're looking into redoing the LUG website (http://lug.ncsu.edu)
using either a CMS or WolfWiki. Adam and Daniel are working together
on this. We need to contact Jack Neely for a reminder on what we can
and cannot do.
- Redhat has close ties with NCSU but hasn't been very closely
involved with our group. Daniel Marcus and I will be working with
Redhat to build closer ties between Redhat and the LUG.
- We're looking for a new faculty advisor for the Linux Users Group.
Our current advisor has done a great job in the past, though his new
responsibilities keep him from having the time to work actively with
the group. If you know of anyone who might be a suitable candidate,
let us know.
We're open to new ideas, so please feel free to share whatever ideas you have.
Hope to see you all at our upcoming meetings!
