I believe Octave is a nearly exact clone. Try that?

I just tried it too, and had a Java error as well, but not "Java not
enabled" at all. It output an error log to my home directory which
says near the top, "Could not reserve enough space for object heap" -
in other words, not enough memory. I believe remote-linux places
limitations on CPU and RAM usage, so that's probably why.

I would definitely try VCL like Will Lane suggested.
