First time is always the hardest :-). Welcome to open source! This is the fun part!
This might be a bit of a hard project (Gnome is huge and complicated), but if you think of a little change you wanna make then go for it. Most projects' developer mailing lists are VERY open to people asking to make changes (and conversely arent exactly ecstatic when people get on and tell *them* to make changes).
For a faster fix, I'd take Adam's suggestion. Find another solution.
