Hello! Thanks to an anonymous donor who wishes to remain anonymous, the Linux Users Group has a new server! It's a quad-core 3.1GHz Xeon with 8GB RAM, which will be much faster and more useful than our sad little existing server.

Existing server users
The server downtime window opens at 8:00am Thursday morning and closes at noon .  The new server will have the same domain as the old server, short.csc.ncsu.edu. An announcement will be sent to the list when it's online.

All home directories will be rsync'd over to the new server. Any data added to your home directory after 8:00am Thursday morning may not make it over to the new server.

The LUG steering committee does not plan to back up any databases from short. Individual users are expected to perform their own database dumps into their home directories, then restore the data themselves on the new server. If you don't know how to back up your databases contact me or Michael Wright ( mdwrigh2@ncsu.[redacted] ) and we'll help you out.

The passwd and shadow files from short will be copied to the new machine, so your existing logins should just work.

We'll also copy over the Apache config and document roots, and install them on the new server.

Please respond to this email if there are any specific packages you'd like the steering committee to install before the server is replaced.

New server users
If you weren't aware, the LUG provides a server for it's members* for non-commercial purposes, such as class projects, website hosting, software development, or keeping an irssi session open.

If you'd like an account on the new server, just send me an email and I'll set you up.

* "Member" basically means the regular attendees recognize you at meetings and/or recognize your nick on IRC
