I would like to allow anyone to come by and spectate, but I can't for a
few reasons:
First, the lab where we'll be competing is behind keypad-locked doors to
specifically prevent people from coming and going as they please. There
would be fire and brimstone raining down on my head if I propped the
door(s) open. Without a prop someone would have to get up and let
people in when they knock, which would be a distraction from the
competition.
Second, the lab is large, but there's so much equipment in there that
there's not an excess of walking/standing room. Further, with all the
servers running it's not exactly quiet in there either. So, to prevent
excess noise, people stooping over competitors when they're coding, and
lack of room, etc I'm going to have to say no to non-student spectators.
However, students may contact me individually (some already have). I
don't have a problem letting 2 or 3 students spectate provided they make
every effort not to be a distraction.
Hope this doesn't sound too mean. Again I'd like to open the doors to
everyone, but my first priority is to my students and fellow competitors.
Cheers
-Chris
