The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NC State University is looking for a new Linux Administrator.

The ECE Department is one of the largest academic units on campus. It consists of over 60 faculty and 40 staff and is responsible for approximately 1000 undergraduate students and 600 graduate students. This is an advanced position where technical work involves implementing and supporting Linux-based operating systems and environments. Position works as part of the ECE IT team and involves frequent interaction with Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) faculty and staff regarding IT support in their teaching, research, administrative and other duties.

The primary functions of this position are:
-Support the department's Linux desktop computers, servers, and all related infrastructure
-Work with faculty, staff, and students to deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot our end user experience. These are primarily RedHat Enterprise Linux; however, a few are based on other Linux variations.
- Linux Software Deployment -- Evaluate, test, and deploy software for faculty, staff, and research desktops via RPM; within our Andrews File System (AFS) environment; and manually on individual machines as needed.
- Linux End User Documentation

In addition, the position is expected to:
-Work with other departmental support staff to improve efficiency and avoid duplication of effort. Also, coordinate with other campus support agencies to encourage sharing of effort.
-Advise the Director of Information Technology; present solutions and recommendations.
-Provide LAN admin support as needed.

Departmental Required Skills In-depth knowledge of installation of different Linux flavors (with an emphasis on RedHat Enterprise Linux); TCP/IP networks; network based installations; understanding of network protocols such as FTP, HTTP, SMB, NFS; scripting with perl/bash; installation of additional Linux packages through RPM and YUM.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education Experience with Nagios and Cacti trending; Linux virtualization; previous usage of AFS filespace; experience with centralized management and systems automation of RedHat Enterprise Linux. Excellent interpersonal skills. Candidates should have a background in customer service and system administration. Group interaction and teamwork skills a necessity. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
