I stand corrected- I thought sftp depended on an SSH server (since OpenSSH enables sftp on Linux machines).

Right.  And I would say rsync, except that SFTP servers are more
cross-platform.

Did you really mean to say that?  You can install an (S)FTP server on
any platform, and there are other ways also.
