trilug is a great source for learning and questions but be prepared to be offended if you say something that someone doesn't agree with even if you are right.  I do not want to deter you but I just want you to be prepared for strong opinions and stupidity that constantly shows its face on that list.  You can browse the archives to see what I am referring to. http://www.trilug.org/pipermail/trilug/

Its certainly OK to post without being a student. You'll probably want
to check out trilug in addition. NCSU lug is pretty small and the topics
are more geared to college students (ex: recently we had a "gaming on
linux" discussion). That being said, you're welcome to stop by. Meetings
are announced on-list and a lot of folks are on #ncsulug (freenode).
