first off, are you using a broadband router? If not be sure that your
linux box is set to dhcp. when you plug in your cable modem, your pc
will get an IP address from Time-Warner/Earthlink and you are on your
way. Depending on what distro you are using you can look/edit the
file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ethX (X should be 0 if you
only have 1 network card). For dhcp to work it needs to look like
this:
DEVICE=ETH0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
ONBOOT=yes
