: LUG: Google Chrome: can't read/save preferences at startup

After updating Google Chrome 32-bit to version 5.0.375.29 beta (on
Ubuntu 9.10), I am unable to save preferences. This occurs on my home
laptop, but it does *not* occur on my desktop at work.
See the attached screenshot. Note that two identical error windows are
actually popped-up each time I start Chrome.
Tried searching for this problem, but didn't turn up anything. I tried
removing ~/.google/, but that didn't affect the problem. Also, the
current permissions for ~/.google are drwxr-xr-x, which should be fine.
Any ideas?
