sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm

Then select gnome as your default display manager if it's not so. Then as mentioned here:

Hi,

I have ubuntu 9.10 and kubuntu installed on top of it. (I remember
doing an install of kubuntu-desktop)

I do not use the 'k' apps, and I would like to get rid of them.

Any idea how I can uninstall the kubuntu and keep/revert to plain normal ubuntu?

Thanks,
Chaitanya.
