I don't know how complex (not to say convoluted) your home directory is,
but you ought to be able to do a completely "clean" install, then copy
over only those files and directories from your backup of your home
directory (yes, I assume you backup your home directory). I keep a set
of dotfiles (e.g., .bashrc, .bash_aliases, .emacs, .vimrc) which I can
easily transfer to any home directory to establish my preferred
environment. This should all be very simple.
