  Hi Lug,

Mondays meeting (7pm eb2 3001) will be a talk by me. I'll be speaking about

the Linux operating system, what it is, what it's used for, how the

ecosystem is structured, and if we have time technical details of interest.

This will be the first of a series of talks this semester given by various

members of the club covering various topics within Linux such as security,

filesystems, networking, automation tooling and more.

  Hello Quentin,

I'm a retired Telecommunications Engineer who still loves playing with

technology. I'm a bit isolated down here in Morehead City with

virtually no one to talk with about Linux / Unix systems. I have about

20 years of playing / using Solaris... starting with 8 and working up to

11.2. I recently abandoned it due to constant problems configuring AMP

server. Seems like every new release had significant changes and I just

couldn't keep up. As well the packages were not available for many

things I wanted to do... So I downloaded a new copy of Linux Mint 18.2

and am thrilled with the ease of use, and what I was able to get

configured and operating in minimal time.

I have hosted my own web sites for close to 15 years and in the past few

years have wanted to get away from Adobe Dreamweaver and move to Word

Press. Now have several sites converted and more to come.

My main purpose for contacting you folks was to try to spawn some

interest down here for a LUG. I'd be happy to pioneer a group, and see

what we can get going. The City College down here has classrooms

available, and I may be able to get access to one for meetings.

If you have any contacts from down here that would be interested in

being part of a local group that would be even better...

I can be reached at XXX 648-0231 most days after 10 am. I'm a late

nighter, and like to sleep in till 9ish.

Let me know what you think

Hibernian Pub is definitely the way to go. $5 burgers on Monday and they are pretty beefy burgers.

  Hello Linux users and enthusiasts,

Tomorrow, Quentin will deliver a technical, in-depth talk on *Linux

security*. The focus will be primarily on servers, but the content can be

generally applied to personal machines as well.

Quentin will cover standard security practices, permissions, capabilities,

and give a brief overview of modules such as SELinux and AppArmor.

Also, the *tech talk schedule* for the remainder of the semester should be

uploaded to the website by Monday evening. You can find that here:

I would like to start a LUG down here in Morehead City... Do you have

any members or requests by people down here? I believe the community

college would likely provide some interested people.

I do webhosting using Linux and had been using Solaris up till last

month. Linux has developed into a pretty unbeatable platform. I was

  ready to switch.

Although Debian may have an edge, I think Mint 18.2 Cinamon is pretty

  hard to beat.
