Hi all,

As you all probably know by now, the LUG has two shared servers hosted on
University racks. One of these, short.csc.ncsu.edu, currently runs Ubuntu
15.10 (Wily), while the other runs RHEL 7.

In light of the recent release of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial), I would like
to unify both of our systems onto this LTS. For short this should be a
relatively painless upgrade; I run Ubuntu Server on my laptop with lots of
personal configuration accumulated over the years and had no issues with an
in-place upgrade over the weekend. Char, on the other hand, requires a bit
of thought:

- What do we want to use char for?
- How should it be configured to accomplish those tasks?
- Is anyone interested in helping to administrate short or char?

My current working plan is to upgrade short in a couple weeks. If all goes
well we should be able to do this remotely. Char will require access to the
server console, but this is relatively easy to arrange. Ultimately I would
like to see them on 16.04 configured for automatic security updates.

If anyone has thoughts on the above questions I encourage you to submit
them to the mailing list.

Thanks,

I would love to see char become a sort of platform-as-a-service server
(something like a trimmed-down Heroku). Although I've never used PaaS
myself, I think that it would be an incredibly productive service to
provide to members who just want to deploy their projects and are too busy
to muck through the days of manual setup. Furthermore, if this "Charoku"
service was for LUG members only, it could be a significant selling point
for the club.

As for administration, I would love to help--but I don't know how much time
I will have in the short term, due to finals and then studying abroad in
China (behind the Great Firewall) immediately afterward.
