Hi LUGers,

I didn't reboot short and char last night for their scheduled monthly
reboot 'cause I forgot, so that will be happening tonight at approximately
midnight. Please remember to login tomorrow and make sure any services you
run were resurrected.

Best to you!

Long answer:
Even though Linux generally has no problems patching itself after applying
updates without needing a reboot, it's not unthinkable that some unpatched
code might stay in memory and require that the relevant process be killed &
reloaded in order to fully patch. We could track exactly which processes
require this but in lieu of that we just reboot the servers once a month.

Short answer:
Our servers are on the University's grid, and the University sysadmins yell
at us if we go too long without rebooting them.

That is a pretty bizarre policy for the University to take - but, to each
their own :)

Greetings,

I don't know what operating system short and char are running. But with Red
Hat Enterprise Linux, and fedora, when a new kernel rpm is installed via
yum or dnf, it is not running yet. A reboot into the new kernel via grub is
required to boot into the new kernel. (To change the value of uname -r ) If
you never rebooted, you could be running a insecure kernel the longer you
wait to reboot.

There are tools that try to get around that. See ksplice for example.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ksplice

Cheers,

Yes. The update schedule for security critical issues is "install ASAP",
and for kernel related issues, that entails an immediate reboot as well.
Other kernel updates are taken care of at monthly reboot.

FTR, short runs RHEL 6 and char runs RHEL 7.
