and how to use it on your own computer.

Thanks, Markus. I'd like to note that this material is particularly
useful if you're planning to install Linux to your own machine. Among
other things, it'll cover how to deal with multiple OSes sharing the
same hard drive.

Regards,
Matthew Frazier

Hello, LUGgers,

Sorry for the late decision, but tonight's dinner will be at Guasaca, a
restaurant specializing in arepas and other Venezuelan food.

Where: Guasaca, 4025 Lake Boone Trail, Suite 107, Raleigh, NC, 27607
When: Tuesday, October 14, 2014, 7:00 PM

If you'll be on Centennial before dinner, Caitlin (countingstars25 on
IRC/ccchestn@ncsu.[redacted] by email) is offering rides, send her a message
if you need a lift.

If you're on Main, you can catch the CAT 4 Rex Hospital bus (towards
Towne North) on the off-campus side of Hillsborough St. at about
6:35-6:40 PM. You'll cross under the Beltline, then pass a shopping
center - once you're past it, pull the cord.

Thanks,
Matthew Frazier

Greetings, campus free/open source community!

After the smashing success of FOSS Fair 2014, we (the LUG @ NC State)
have decided to continue holding it! We don't have room reservations or
sponsors yet, though we're shooting for "sometime in February, in
Engineering Building II" as with the years past.

We would greatly appreciate help with planning the Fair! One simple way
you can help is by filling out the Early Planning Survey at
http://go.ncsu.edu/ndhray -- this just asks for some general feedback
about FOSS Fair, and what dates you think would work well for 2015.

Until we have a set date for the Fair and are ready to begin marketing
in earnest, planning announcements will take place on the
opensource@lists.ncsu.[redacted] mailing list -- to subscribe, email
mj2@lists.ncsu.[redacted] and put "subscribe opensource" in the message. You
can also join the #ncsufossfair IRC channel on irc.freenode.net.

With your help, we can make this the best FOSS Fair yet. See you at the
Fair!

Thanks,
Matthew Frazier

Topic: The State of Open Source Bookkeeping
Presenter: Eric Leary

Synopsis:
=========
The domain of financial record keeping could greatly benefit from new
open source projects that provide accounting software solutions for
the small to medium enterprise. The current offerings don't fulfill
contemporary requirements, are often buggy and moribund in the
maintenance of the code base, or are intractable to implement without
extensive commitment from third party developers.

Quickbooks Online and Xero accounting will be held up as
representative targets from the commercial world that the open source
community should pursue with competitive products and frameworks. The
talk will delve into GnuCash and other open source offerings, showing
their strengths and weaknesses in today's world.

Bio:
=========
Eric is not an accountant, he is a bookkeeper. He has been using
Quickbooks for over 17 years in a wide range of industries, but he is
drawn to Python and Open Source for some strange reason. I think he
would prefer to give it all up and go back to theater set design, but
such is life.

When: Saturday, October 25, 2014, 12:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Where: Mann 301

Mann Hall is the Civil Engineering building, between Riddick and Broughton
on North Campus (very close to Daniels).

If you've never been to a hack day before, they're a lot of fun.
Basically, we just all hang out in a room and work on stuff together.
Hack days are great opportunities to work on projects (school, work,
or personal), learn about new technologies, come up with ideas, and
play games of all kinds! Also, we usually go to dinner together afterwards.

If you have access to surge protectors, drinks, board games, card
games, or snacks, and don't mind bringing some, visit our wiki page
here and tell us what you're bringing:

http://lug.ncsu.edu/wiki/2014-10-25_Hack_Day/

But, if you don't want to/can't afford to bring any equipment or
consumables, *please* don't feel like you have to bring something to
show up.

We hope to see you on Saturday!

Hey all,

I'm delighted to announce what is probably the highlight of this semester's
talk schedule: Our very own vice president, Ian "ik" Kilgore is gracing us
with his unique insights. He's given his talk the title: "YOUR FOOD IS
ALWAYS OUTSIDE OF YOU", with a subtitle of "(some ideas about Space but
definitely not Time)". Here's what he has to say about the content:

"I'm going to, in an accessible way, cover some mathematical and physical
ideas that I think are important or at least pretty cool. (CHILL. OUT.) You
probably spent a lot of time in grade school factoring polynomials or
whatever. I don't care about that. I want to talk about why orbits work,
what happens in 5-D, why the World Series is slightly better than a coin
toss, databases are broken forever, truth itself is wrong, and what happens
if an infinite number of buses roll up at your house. Or some subset of
that.

I'll cover three or four discrete topics, so don't worry if you get lost;
you'll be following along again in a few slides. Any equations will be
supplementary only- you won't have to understand them to get the general
idea.

Here's what loudbot has to say:
< LOUDBOT> ik: GIVEN YOUR PAST PERFORMANCE THIS MAY QUALIFY AS A MIRACLE"

When: Tuesday, 11/04/2014, 7pm
Where: EB2, 1229

See you all there! YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS THIS!

Can the talk be recorded, so that future generations may also benefit, and
those of us that will be attending can relive the glory that will occur?
