Hello, LUGgers,

Right now I'm in Montral at PyCon. I won't make it back to Raleigh in
time for elections tomorrow night, so I'm emailing in my campaign speech.

It's definitely been a great semester for the LUG - the crowning
achievement, of course, is FOSS Fair, but our week-to-week and
month-to-month meetings and hack days have been a success as well. As
much as I'd like to take the credit, it really belongs to the LUG as a
whole (especially Barry and Caitlin).

I do think I still have a lot to offer the LUG as President, though. I
will bring my planning skills to bear on some sort of grand event for
our upcoming 20th Anniversary, and start planning FOSS Fair earlier so
it can return to its former glory. I'm going to put extra effort into
finding great topics for our technical sessions - something I feel that
I let slide a bit this year. And I'll also continue our recent
promotional drive, with the return of the Packapalooza booth.

I will admit - I have a tough schedule lined up next semester, including
Senior Design. But, if my coursework becomes too much of a burden, I'm
more than willing to step back (or step down) and let the VP handle
things. (With warning, of course!)

TL;DR: Vote for me. I'll keep doing what we've been doing, but without
phoning in talks.

Thanks,
Matthew Frazier
President, LUG @ NC State

You have my vote, or rather would. FYC is doing a thing so I'll be unable to attend and thereby withdraw from whatever I'm nominated for. Hope it goes well.

Subject: [TriLUG-announce] May 8 Meeting: SystemD and Steering Committee
Elections
Message-ID: <534E76FB.5040303@ncsu.[redacted]>

Topic: SystemD
Presenter: David Both
When: Thursday, 8th May 2014, 7pm (pizza from 6.45pm)
Where: NC State Engineering Building II Room 1021, Centennial Campus
Parking: The parking decks and Oval Drive street parking are free after 5pm
Website: http://trilug.org/2014-05-08/systemd

This presentation will briefly review the Linux boot process and the old
SystemV startup process. It will then discuss in more detail the startup
process using systemd, and the reasons for creating the new systemd
daemon and some of the advantages it provides. We will also discuss
configuration files and some of the more common commands required to
cause systemd to do our bidding. Backward compatibility will also be
covered.

Note that we will be having our elections on May 8. To vote in the
elections, you will need to be a TriLUG "member". If you filled out a
membership form at the April meeting or before, you are all set. Voting
will be performed by paper ballot during the May meeting, and you must
be present to vote.

In addition to voting for the new steering committee, there will be a
vote to approve the new bylaws of Trilug, which is being done to improve
our ability to register as a nonprofit charity with the IRS. For the
most part, the new bylaws are being created by refactoring the articles
of incorporation and separating out day to day business from "What makes
us Trilug". There will be a special interest meeting on these bylaws
next week for anyone interested - keep an eye out for the announcement.

Topic: TriLUG Bylaw Draft Review
When: 7:30 PM Tuesday 22 April 2014
Where: NCSU Engineering Building 3 Room 2220

The Steering Committee is holding an open business meeting on Tuesday,
April 22 to discuss the new bylaws being drafted as part of an effort to
get Trilug back on the books as a nonprofit charity. As the bylaws
directly affect the membership, we want to make sure that your voices
are heard and that you have a chance to take part before we vote on the
issue in the May regular meeting.

If you are thinking about running for Steering Committee, this would be
a tremendously valuable experience, but all members are invited to attend.

The meeting will be held at NC State's Engineering Building THREE in
room 2220 at 7:30 PM. If you can't attend in person, somebody will be
powering a google hangout so that you can still interact with us and see
what's going on.

Do you have sys admin kung fu? Is your Java, JavaScript, Python, Ruby,
BASH, HTML5, C, C++, Perl, Go, or PHP code considered fine literature in
some countries? Do you assign all the things in your house IPv6 subnets for
fun? Are you fluent in the foreign languages of Joomla or Drupal? Do you
have design improvement suggestions for the data storage or database
systems at the Large Hadron Collider? Does Bruce Schneier consult with you
before making a blog post on security? Are you no longer capable of giving
tech support to friends and family using Windows because you can't remember
the interface any more? Do you talk to people in Japan on 5 watts QRP with
your SDR and GNU Radio?

If so ... we want you to submit a talk to SELF! But hurry ... time runs out
at 9 PM today!

(In a rush? Your proposal doesn't have to be an academic dissertation. Just
as long as we can tell what our attendees would be learning from the talk
... you're good!)
