Hello, LUGgers!
In just eight days, I will be flying to Montr�al to attend PyCon 2014.
And for some reason, they're letting me talk about subways for five
minutes - specifically, about a Python program I wrote that finds the
fastest way to ride the entire Montr�al M�tro.
So, at this week's LUG meeting, I'll give a preview of what I'll be
talking about in Montr�al, as well as a brief introduction to graph
theory. Graph theory is one of those branches of mathematics that's
incredibly useful regardless of what you're doing in computer science,
whether you're writing a package manager or riding a subway.
When: Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at 7:00 PM
Where: EB III 2220
This meeting also marks the beginning of Officer Nomination for the
Fall 2014 semester. If you'd like to serve as LUG President, Vice
President, PR Officer, or Treasurer, read the job descriptions in our
Constitution [1], then announce your candidacy at the meeting or on
our mailing list. The deadline for nominations is Tuesday, April 8, at
8:00 PM EDT.
I'm not sure if I'll necessarily have a full 60 minutes of material,
so if you'd like to talk about something, bring some sort of plan to
the meeting, and we may split it into halves. Or, we may plan an April
Fool's joke. (No one will expect a joke to appear on April 2!) Either
way, we'll go out to dinner afterwards, as usual.

Ansible is a powerful remote system management tool like Puppet or
Chef for configuration management and like Fabric and Capistrano for
application deployment. Ansible can also do system provisioning
through modules for various cloud providers. As a hybrid, Ansible is a
little more step-wise than a pure configuration management system
(which makes it better for deploying software and dealing with
multiple system tiers) and more declarative than your typical remote
automation framework (which makes it easier to manage dissimilar
systems, even systems not originally deployed with Ansible). It has
very minimal client requirements and no deployed client agent. Joseph
will introduce Ansible for single tasks and highlight some of the
built in modules and what you can do with them. Then he will jump into
best practices for stringing multiple tasks together into Ansible
Playbooks (especially how not to repeat yourself). Finally, he'll tie
it all together with Amazon EC2 to show how to fire up spot instances
using a base image, configure it with a set of software and
configuration, do some work with it, and finally tear it all down.

Mann Hall is the Civil Engineering building, between Riddick and Broughton
on North Campus (very close to Daniels).
If you've never been to a hack day before, they're a lot of fun.
Basically, we just all hang out in a room and work on stuff together.
Hack days are great opportunities to work on projects (school, work,
or personal), learn about new technologies, come up with ideas, and
play games of all kinds!
If you have access to surge protectors, drinks, board games, card
games, or snacks, and don't mind bringing some, visit our wiki page

For newcomers, keep in mind that the LUG does not pay for dinner --

a beverage.

Each year in May, TriLUG elects its steering committee.
We usually start the process in April with nominations... nominate
yourself or some other unsuspecting TriLUG member. You can do this by
sending an email to the main mailing list, or speak up at the April
meeting when we ask for nominations. We'll spend the month of April
smearing each other's reputations on the mailing list until there's
only a few thick-skinned suckers left. During the May meeting, the
survivors will be given the mic for a short stump speech and then
we'll vote.
Five lucky winners will serve for a one-year term. They'll be
responsible for planning the meetings, both in content and logistics.
And they'll deal with other issues as they arise: additional "hack
day" events, administrative stuff, maybe finding a new meeting room if
needed. The steering committee can recruit help from members, but
basically they make sure that Stuff Gets Done(tm). A detailed list of

Be thinking about whether you'd like to contribute to TriLUG by
serving on the steering committee. It's a good cause, and it's fun.
To vote in the elections or to serve on the committee, you will need
to be a TriLUG "member". If you filled out a membership form at the
April meeting or before, you are all set. Voting will be performed by
paper ballot during the May meeting, and you must be present to vote.
