I am in desperate need for computer programmers (who are familiar with
iOS) for two important tasks that need to be completed by February 10
for the museum exhibit:
1. Program a user interface for an iPad that allows users to select from
various video/audio clips to play on the iPad. We can provide the
graphic for the interface, but we need someone to program the
interactive part and to make it so that the iPad is running in kiosk mode.
2. Program for the iPad as well a map of the world that shows routes of
migration, destinations and numbers (we provide all the data). It also
allows the use by touching an icon to follow the story of one particular
individual through a played video clip.
I would greatly appreciate it if you could help locate someone (possibly
the same person) to do these two tasks.
Thank you!!!!
Akram

Hello, LUGgers!
I'm just sending out another reminder about our Spring 2014 planning
meeting, which happens tomorrow in EB II. The planning meeting is your
best chance to let us know what you want the LUG to do this semester --
or, if nothing else, just a chance to hang out and get out of the cold.
When: Tuesday, January 7, 2014, at 7:00 PM
Where: Engineering Building II room 3001
Once you're in EB II, find a staircase, go all the way up to the 3rd
floor, and then move to the center of the building. 3001 is in the
bridge that connects the two halves of EB II.
Our agenda will be:
- Introductions, including the new Steering Committee
- Financial Report (this will be *very* short)
- High-Level Goals
- Meeting Dates and Times
- Meeting Locations
- FOSS Fair
- Hack Day Dates and Times
- Longer-Term Project: LUG 20th Anniversary Reunion
- Meeting Topic Suggestions and Other Business
- Where to Eat Dinner
If you're interested in any of these, make sure you drop by the planning
meeting! Even if you can't make it in person, you can email your
feedback to the list, or drop in the #ncsulug IRC channel on Freenode.
(For info about connecting to IRC, see [1].)

New year, new semester!
Our first social dinner of the semester will be at Mitch's Tavern. Dinner
doesn't really have a specific topic, besides "stuff that we think is
cool/has been happening recently/over the holidays."
When: Tuesday, January 14, 7:00 PM
Where: Mitch's Tavern, 2426 Hillsborough Street
For newcomers, keep in mind that the LUG does not pay for dinner - everyone
pays for what they order. (Mitch's prices are reasonable, though .) But if
the restaurant isn't busy, they shouldn't mind if you just hang out with us
and maybe have a beverage.
Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Hey everyone!
We'll have a talk by Barry Peddycord III on Tuesday, January 21 on his game
development with Curses/streaming workflow. Here is his description:
"I'm going to talk about the new software powering my blog that allows me
to stream my terminal directly to my website! I use a Rube-Goldberg-esque
combination of open source software, virtual private servers, and the one
true Emacs to livestream and record my roguelike game development! I can
get as technical as you like, so bring lots of questions!"
When: January 21, 2014, 7pm
Where: EB 2, 3001 (on the bridge between the two wings)
Wow, much talk, such topic! Hope to see you all there!

Where: Bojangles, 3808 Western Blvd, Raleigh, NC
For newcomers, keep in mind that the LUG does not pay for dinner - everyone

It's official now, we'll have our first hack day of the semester on
Saturday!
When: Saturday, February 1, 2014, 12:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Where: Mann Hall, room 301
Mann Hall is the Civil Engineering building, between Riddick and Broughton
on North Campus (very close to Daniels).
If you've never been to a hack day before, they're a lot of fun.
Basically, we just all hang out in a room and work on stuff together.
Hack days are great opportunities to work on projects (school, work,
or personal), learn about new technologies, come up with ideas, and
play games of all kinds!
If you have access to surge protectors, drinks, board games, card
games, or snacks, and don't mind bringing some, visit our wiki page
here and tell us what you're bringing:
http://ncsu.lug.xxx/wiki/2014-02-01_Hack_Day/
But, if you don't want to/can't afford to bring any equipment or
consumables, *please* don't feel like you have to bring something to
show up. Also note that we're promoting this event as a Linux installation
workshop for CS undergrads, so anyone willing to help new people installing
and getting to know Linux would be most welcome (as is everyone else, of
course!).
We hope to see you there!

Subject: [TriLUG-announce] Feb 13th Meeting: Ansible
Message-ID: <52EFD3BE.2070607@ncsu.[redacted]>
Topic: Ansible
Presenter: Joseph Tate
When: Thursday, 13th February 2014, 7pm (pizza from 6.45pm)
Where: NC State Engineering Building II Room 1021, Centennial Campus
Parking: The parking decks and Oval Drive street parking are free after 5pm
Link: http://trilug.org/2014-02-13/ansible
Ansible is a powerful remote system management tool like Puppet or Chef
for configuration management and like Fabric and Capistrano for
application deployment. Ansible can also do system provisioning through
modules for various cloud providers. As a hybrid, Ansible is a little
more step-wise than a pure configuration management system (which makes
it better for deploying software and dealing with multiple system tiers)
and more declarative than your typical remote automation framework
(which makes it easier to manage dissimilar systems, even systems not
originally deployed with Ansible). It has very minimal client
requirements and no deployed client agent. Joseph will introduce Ansible
for single tasks and highlight some of the built in modules and what you
can do with them. Then he will jump into best practices for stringing
multiple tasks together into Ansible Playbooks (especially how not to
repeat yourself). Finally, he'll tie it all together with Amazon EC2 to
show how to fire up spot instances using a base image, configure it with
a set of software and configuration, do some work with it, and finally
tear it all down.
