Hello,
This Thursday (Nov 14) is TriLUG's regular meeting. The main
presentation by Sean Alexandre is on Cryptography and GPG. We are also
holding a workshop on the Saturday (Nov 16) where you can generate
your own GPG keys, sign other people's keys, and/or help improve
TriLUG's website and services.
This is the first time we have tried holding a weekend workshop in the
new Red Hat building, so please bear with us as we learn the ropes.
The plan is to meet in the lobby at 10am (try to be 5 min early) and
be escorted to the meeting room. We need to supply a list of attendees
to the security dept 24 hours in advance, so please fill out the RSVP
form below.
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1wyK4CBYmuQJrzPPj1K1fzzQ9upvRRhlNmpsIi0VBJG0/viewform

Hello, LUGgers!
Most immediately, we have selected a location for dinner tomorrow
night: Zaxby's. The loose theme for our dinner will be the history of
the LUG - we have recently unearthed a variety of historical Web pages
about the beginnings of our organization [1], and as it turns out,
we're surprisingly old - 19 years this month.
Where: Zaxby's, 2901 Hillsborough Street
When: Tuesday, November 19th, 7:00 PM
Dinner will be the last opportunity to nominate yourself for LUG
office, before we finalize the slate of candidates. If you can't make
it to dinner, you can nominate on the mailing list up until the 19th
at 7:00 PM. The current list of nominees is on the Elections wiki page
[2].
Again - voting will actually take place at our Annual LUG Elections &
Movie Night, on December 3rd. If you can't make it there to vote, we
will work out some sort of absentee voting scheme.
====
In addition, we have confirmed the location of our November Hack Day!
When: September 21, 2013, from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Where: Mann 301, North Campus
Mann Hall is the Civil Engineering building, between Riddick (physics)
and Broughton (abandoned/music). If you're bringing a car, parking on
campus is free on weekends.
What can you do at a hack day? Almost anything! Here's some things
we've done at hack days before:
- Develop the LUG Web site
- Write IRC bots
- Annoy mamarley while he's trying to play Minecraft [3]
- Work on homework
- Read papers
- Install Linux on things
- Build things out of circuits
- Watch movies about sorting algorithms
- Play all types of board and card games
- Play Teeworlds
That said, we will need power for both ourselves and our computers. If
you have access to surge protectors, drinks, board games, card games,
or snacks, and don't mind bringing some, visit our wiki page here and
tell us what you're bringing:
http://lug.ncsu.edu/wiki/2013-11-23_Hack_Day/
But, if you don't want to/can't afford to bring any equipment or
consumables, *please* don't feel like you have to bring something to
show up.
====
We hope to see you at all of these places!
Thanks,
Matthew Frazier

[3] We would like to clarify that this was solely for the purposes of
testing out Minecraft scripting on a Raspberry Pi, by randomly
creating buildings and teleporting him. None of mamarley's feelings
were hurt during this experimentation.

Hello, LUGgers!
I just wanted to remind everyone again about the awesome hack day we
have planned for Saturday!
When: Saturday, November 23, 2013, 12:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Where: Mann Hall, room 301
Mann Hall is the Civil Engineering building, located on North Campus
between Riddick (physics) and Broughton (abandoned/music). If you're
bringing a car, parking on campus is free on weekends.
If you've never been to a hack day before, they're a lot of fun.
Basically, we just all hang out in a room and work on stuff together.
Hack days are great opportunities to work on projects (school, work,
or personal), learn about new technologies, come up with ideas, and
play games of all kinds!
If you have access to surge protectors, drinks, board games, card
games, or snacks, and don't mind bringing some, visit our wiki page
here and tell us what you're bringing:

Just a reminder that our hack day is today! If you're not doing anything
else, you should drop by (at least for a couple of hours) and hang out
with us!

Hi all! My colleagues at the IEEE ENCS Chapter of the Robotics and
Automation Society have meetings at NCSU on the first monday of every
month. Here are the two upcoming talks, which may be of interest to some
of you!
Raspberry Pi Hacks
Monday December 2nd,2013 7:00-8:30 arrive early for networking and food
Tom Callaway and Ruth Suehle, authors of Raspberry Pi Hacks (OReilly,
December 2013) will share hints and tips for brave hackers ready to
bring their ideas to life with the Raspberry Pi. Theyll start with the
important basics of doing tricks with your Pi and go on to talk about a
few fun projects, from game emulators to cameras in the sky. This talk
is fun for both experienced builders and novices, so feel free to bring
along kids, friends, neighbors, and anyone else you think might like to
get started building with the Pi.
Details and registration:
https://meetings.vtools.ieee.org/meeting_view/list_meeting/21625
Autonomous Vehicles
Monday January 6,2014 7:00-9:00 arrive early for networking and food
Mr. Randall led the Insight Racing team in the DARPA (Defense Advanced
Research Projects Agency) Grand Challenge series of races. Insight
Racings last entry was a computer driven Lotus Elise which was
developed in conjunction with NC State University. The Elise would drive
through city traffic without remote control or any human intervention
whatsoever. Mr. Randall will discuss how the team was put together and
review the architecture of the autonomous vehicle. He will also discuss
the future of autonomous vehicles. http://www.insightracing.org/
Mr. Randall also wants to discuss a group project to develop a life-like
humanoid robot that can interact using a natural language interface.
Many aspects of this projects will be described and discussed. He is
looking for participation from anyone that is interested.
