Keith will talk about intellectual property as a reality that shapes
the context for open source software, particularly when overlaid
against trends in technologies such as mobile and cloud computing,
provide the history of Open Invention Network and its licensee
community, and discuss Linux Defenders and other opportunities for
community members to contribute proactively for the benefit of open
source software.

Keith Bergelt is the chief executive officer of Open Invention
Network (OIN), the collaborative enterprise that enables innovation
in open source and an increasingly vibrant ecosystem around Linux. In
this capacity he is directly responsible for enabling, influencing and
defending the integrity of the Linux ecosystem. Central to the
achievement of his goals is the acquisition and transfer of patent
rights designed to permit members of the Linux ecosystem to operate
free of the threat of assertion and litigation from those whose
business models are antithetical to innovation and global economic
growth in information technology and computing.

Hai Lugz:

Summer's almost over and school's almost back in session. One thing we
haven't done this summer that we wanted to was have a backyard
barbecue! So if you want to join us on the last sunday of summer
vacation, long-time Lugger Sha`Bren is hosting one in his back yard
and LUG members are invited!

The cookout will be held from 6-9 PM on Sunday, August 18th. This'll
be done potluck style, so either bring some food or provide some other
service to earn your place at the table. :)

RSVP at the link below. We will send you details such as the address
closer to the event.

Subject: Planning Meeting (Tuesday 7PM), Packapalooza (Saturday)
Message-ID: <5212247D.30002@ncsu.[redacted]>

Hello, LUGgers!

Tomorrow, we'll offically be kicking off our semester with a planning
meeting. Everyone is invited, even if you've never been to a LUG meeting
before. We'll discuss our meeting and hack day plans for the months of
September and October, and set up our demo for Packapalooza on Saturday.

Where: DH Hill Library, 2nd floor
When: 7 PM, Tuesday, August 20

If you can't make it to the planning meeting in person, join the
#ncsulug-business channel on irc.freenode.net. If you can make it in
person, we'll probably grab dinner somewhere on Hillsborough Street
afterwards.

Speaking of Packapalooza, it's this Saturday, and the LUG will have a
vendor table! Packapalooza is a giant street festival that will be
taking over Hillsborough Street this Saturday, August 24, from 1 PM to 7 PM.

The LUG's table will give people the chance to see something even more
awesome than Chancellor Woodson playing guitar: Minecraft running on a
Raspberry Pi, and us controlling it using Python. We have some cool
ideas for demos, and we'll write a few up at the planning meeting on
Tuesday. We'll also be advertising our technical sessions, social
dinners, and hack days (which is why it's important to get that nailed
down at the planning meeting).

We hope to see you all there!

Subject: Packapalooza Hack Afternoon Friday, Vote for a September Hack Day
Message-ID: <521578E6.6030103@ncsu.[redacted]>

Hello, LUGgers!

Because of all the awesome things we were planning at the planning
meeting, we didn't actually get a chance to work on any of our cool
Minecraft demos. So, we're setting up a hack afternoon to hack on
Minecraft, and to hack on some construction paper and a trifold board so
we'll have a poster with our new marketing materials on it.

Where: Hunt Library Fishbowl (on the 4th floor)
When: Friday, August 21, 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM

We'll provide the Pi and the peripherals, so all you need to bring is
ideas (and any projects of your own that you want to work on). If you
just want to hang out, that's cool too!

Besides the hack afternoon, we are having a full hack day (10 AM - 8 PM)
sometime in the month of September, but we need you to help us decide
when! Just visit this link to vote:

http://doodle.com/8eqngr6d42p6e354

You don't need to stay the full day -- just pick any day you can drop
by. Hopefully, we'll be able to pick a date in time to advertise it at
Packapalooza.

And finally, I would just like to remind everyone again that
Packapalooza will be this Saturday, from 2 PM to 10 PM (though depending
on how tired and/or hot we get, we may not stick around the whole
evening). Our booth will be in parking space 703 along Hillsborough
Street, between the intersection with Pogue and Horne.

Message-ID: <CAMjyYxrcfzx6j_exndE_-T4dEg2M++Gmjk8221QGm5Hq41VqrQ@mail.gmail.[redacted]>

Hello, LUGgers,

Next Tuesday, we will have our first social dinner of the semester
together, at Chipotle Mexican Grill. Dinner doesn't really have a
specific topic, besides "stuff that we think is cool/has been
happening recently."

When: Tuesday, August 27, 7:00 PM
Where: Chipotle, 2316 Hillsborough Street (across from 1911 Building)

For newcomers, keep in mind that the LUG does not pay for dinner --
everyone pays for what they order. (A burrito at Chipotle, while
generously sized, will run you about $7.) But if the restaurant isn't
busy, they shouldn't mind if you just hang out with us and maybe have
a beverage.

Hope to see you there!

Thanks,
Matthew Frazier
