The problem is not the weekly LUG, but the monthly TriLug. I have not see all the classrooms, and I am sure we have some nice lecture halls, but the last TriLug I went to had a load of people.

Ideally we won't have to worry about getting any "special" rooms. The
plan is to get a classroom reserved through Registration and Records,
same as any other club. I can't imagine a place in Hunt that we'd be
able to get on a weekly basis that's big enough for our own group, let
alone TriLUG.

So far, the best luck we've had has been in EB1 1007, and I'll be
happy with any room in EB1, 2, or 3. Either way, I can't get a room
through R&R until the second week of the fall semester.

Hi,

1020(?), 1025, 1220, 1225 are large capacity in EBII;
for those with access to it - me, Carlos B.(?), Dan Green,
etc. ) in ad astra for Facilities can tell capacity of rooms for
scheduling. I'm not sure of door closing time for EGRC 136
(N.B. - another building & parking deck(s)) but that has to be
coordinated by COE Dean's Office just like 3002 EBII
( Progress Energy Conference Room on the EBII Bridge
between the East ("CSC") and West
"ECE") wings.)

tnx,

All of the reservable rooms are here:
http://www.ncsu.edu/registrar/scheduling/pdf/roomlist.pdf

EB1 1007 has a capacity of ~90, which is a gracious plenty for "usual"
TriLUG meetings. I've only been to a few that have exceeded that
count, and they were on unusually popular topics, like Raspberry Pi,
for instance.

A strong -1 to this endeavor, as I think there's a lot of downside for the
LUG without much upside.

Historically, the LUG has provided a lot of opportunities for students to
fill roles that I think a lot us wouldn't see or take advantage of
otherwise. Everything from giving talks, to organizing events, to leading
the club. With a constant ingress and egress of members this is pretty
natural and is a big win for the members in my opinion. It also means you
get the same talks every few years since a lot of the new members won't be
familiar with the material (how many times did we make Alex give that LaTeX
talk?). Once you combine meetings with a larger, more permanent group, I
imagine this type of thing is going to become a lot less common. The
semi-permanent members are going to want to see new talks, and a lot of the
speakers are going to be closer to the professional end than the hobbyist,
dorm-room hacker end. I think you'll see similar things happen when you
have an older, more permanent steering committee that the LUG's officers
now has to interact and coordinate with. I'd also be pretty nervous about
the average experience level of the members of the TriLUG scaring off
people who are newer to Linux that might feel more comfortable in a student
group.

Outside of some logistical wins, what do you guys see as being the big
benefit? Because in my mind, if they stay separate, students still have the
option of going to both meetings, so it isn't like students going to miss
out on any talks or socialization if they don't want to. From the other
perspective, there are a lot of people who are members of the LUG but not
the TriLUG, and I don't think that's just by chance.

Would you still object if the LUG meetings are held every Thursday
night in EB2, and once a month TriLUG also met in EB2 on a Thursday ?

You would have the option of going to the LUG or TriLUG. Perhaps the
LUG could schedule that particular night as an informal workshop,
giving LUG members the option to go to the TriLUG meeting if the topic
was of interest.

TriLUG is currently in the process of securing a room in EB2 for our
meetings via friendly faculty staff. So I think Barry was looking to
stimulate more synergy between the groups - from which both groups
would benefit.

Why would we move the meetings to explicitly conflict? That seems even more
absurd and harmful to the people who do want to attend both.

The issues of TriLUG getting a room on-campus and combining the two
meetings are almost entirely orthogonal, and I'm still not sure what the
gains of the latter are for the LUG.
