Greetings, LUG members:

I have come to a dilemma which I am afraid to cross and had not been
able to solve successfully, let me know if anybody has some insights
into solving the problem.

I am upgrading a non-profit site that is running on Centos 5.5 which
uses PHP5.1.6 to run it's Drupal site.

The CentOS server runs three virtual host site, all using the same PHP
version - this is where my dilemma lies

1) I need to upgrade only one site
2) The new site will go from Drupal to Joomla 2.5, which means new
versions of PHP (5.2.4 or higher) is required

3) Updating the server's PHP for the new site will break the other two site

Solution i read so far suggest making use of CGI and giving different
versions of PHP to each different site.

This solution has proven to be very difficult and I have been
unsuccessful so far.

Does anyone think they can solve this or have experience?

Thanks,
Don Lam

The e-mail probably didn't come through because he isn't subscribed to the
mailing list, which I think is required.

I haven't had to do this before, but it looks like he needs to compile the
newer version of PHP himself (making sure to enable fast-cgi), then just
setup apache to use CGI, picking a different fast cgi server in each
virtualhost.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to find a reasonable walkthrough of the
process. This one<http://blog.servergrove.com/2011/08/22/how-to-setup-multiple-php-versions-on-apache/>is
good for compiling and setting up fastcgi for one virtualhost, but the
other will continue to use mod_php, which is fine as long as he only needs
two different versions. This
one<https://barelysufficient.org/2011/01/concurrently-running-multiple-versions-of-php/>basically
skips over the compilation of PHP, but has the right Apache conf
files for using multiple versions of PHP with fastcgi (so he could run as
many PHP versions as he wanted). A combination of the two would probably be
best, but the first might work as a quick patch to get things going.

Best of luck!

Michael

Because our President and VP are graduating this December, we need to
build a new ballot for the officer elections. As per our constitution,
nominations were officially made this evening. We hold elections for
our four officer positions:

President - The person in charge
Vice President - The person in charge when President == false
Treasurer - Money
PR - The secretary who sends out e-mails

Currently running for these positions are:

Barry Peddycord (PR) running for Prez, VP, and PR
Matthew Frazier (Treasurer) running for Prez, VP, and Treasurer
Michael Marley running for Prez, VP, and Treasurer
ik (Switzerland) running for Treasurer

Nominations are open from now until 11/27 (election day). You may
nominate by...

* Adding yourself to the slate:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Aoibb8rPmengdHhMRzNacHRSWUVQTnVVU2J2Y3lGSEE
* Sending an e-mail to this list
* Bugging mdwright or IsharaComix in IRC
* Coming to the Hack Day this weekend and asking to be added

You may run for more than one position, but only current NC State
Students, Faculty and Staff are eligible. We will hold elections in
order of decreasing executive power - if you lose an election, you
will be rolled over to the next ballot.

Here's hoping some more folks step up to the plate!

Vote for me!

*Raspberry Pi:*

Raspberry Pi is a very inexpensive, richly capable single board computer
(SBC) designed for educational settings. It features a modest speed ARM
chip, a half gigabyte of RAM, flash SD, USB, ethernet, graphic and direct
digital I/O interfaces that work together with a highly capable port of
Debian Linux as a general purpose computing system that can as easily host
your home web server or LAN engine as it can keep an eye on your thermostat
or dispense cat food while you're away.

*Synopsis:*

In this introduction to Raspberry Pi attendees will get up close and
personal with the hardware and software combination that is setting a new
high water mark for price, performance, and useability. Multiple RPi demos
in the main and conference rooms will be in operation during the meeting to
provide the best opportunity for hands on experience. Traditional slide
presentations will cover where RPi came from, what its capabilities are,
and its charter for driving a wide range of educational opportunities while
serving as an "instant platform" for a wide range of applications in hobby
and light commercial settings. The bulk of the meeting will offer demos
that go from "close to the metal," low level apps encroaching on the
traditional domain of the Arduino family of SBCs to high level tools such
as Clojure (Lisp implemented with the Java virtual machine).
Join a group of Splat Space hackers coordinated by the main speaker as they
and other volunteers provide a rich introduction to this remarkable $35
device.

*Bio:*

Main speaker Pete Soper is an underemployed software engineer who moved to
the RTP area when Data General extended its R&D from Massachusetts in 1977.
He went on to work for three from-scratch area startups and ended up with
Sun Microsystems until a little before Oracle took them over. Pete's done
mostly system software development such as compilers, operating system
kernels, virtual machines, data communication protocol implementations, and
language runtime systems. He wrote the embedded operating system kernels
and many of the device drivers for Business Application System's and
Network Product's statistical multiplexor products, once each in TI 9900,
8086 and 68k assembler and once in C. He did a lot of work on various Java
implementations at Sun after helping convince the engineering and research
organizations to embrace the Hotspot VM, and tried (but failed) to get a
process abstraction into java.lang via JSR-121. More recently he's been
making data loggers and other gadgets using TI MSP430, Atmel Mega, and
ARM-based SBCs. Pete started with Linux when the Slackware distro came on
35 floppies for a blistering 35 bogomips. He's married and has a daughter
in high school.

Since the beginning of time, the LUG has met every week on Tuesdays.
Now that I'm the president-elect, I feel like that should be changed
(mostly because I'm going to be off in Durham those nights).

I've developed a poll to see when folks are able to meet next Spring.
If participating in the LUG is one of your weekly rituals, I suggest
making your availability known lest you be cast out from the group you
love so. We'll finalize the decision at our January planning meeting.
