Topic: The fundamentals of git usage and internals
Presenter: Jimmy Thrasher
When: Thursday, November 8, 7pm
Where: Red Hat HQ, NCSU Centennial Campus, 1801 Varsity Dr, Raleigh, NC
Webpage: http://trilug.org/2012-11-08/git
Synopsis:
Git is a powerful tool that suffers from an abstruse and leaky user
interface and a somewhat steep learning curve. Using git effectively
requires a working knowledge of how it functions. In this talk you
will learn the very basics of using git along with what is happening
under the hood while you use it.
Bio:
Jimmy has been programming since he was 7 or so and is currently a
freelance Rails and iOS developer. He has been using git since 2006
and depends very heavily on it for everything from production and
side-project code to configuration. When not programming, he spends
time with his family, attending church, helping to run a small
classical Christian school in Mebane (Mebbin, not Meebane), and
collecting hobbies. His superpower is spewing out useless trivia at
tangents to the current conversation. Did you know that North Carolina
has more varieties of fungus than any of the other lower 48 states?

Good Morning fellow LUGers,
I have recently had retinal rettachment surgery, and have yet to
recover enough to read a computer screen. In the meantime, I would
like to install a screen reader to help me out. Primarily I need some
thing for reading keyboard input, console output, and web pages in
firefox(or another web browser that is more accessible). I have tried
orca and Yasr so far, but cannot figure out how to get them working.
Any help would be appreciated.
I am using Debian testing with LXDE as my desktop. I do most of my
work via terminal with firefox being the primary GUI application I
use. I am also running a Windows XP virtual machine for a batabase
class and a screen reader that would work within it to allow me to use
access would be also be useful.

We'll be holding Lightning talks in SAS 1108 next Tuesday at 19:00.
For those of you unfamiliar with the idea of a lightning talk, it's
exactly what it sounds like: you talk for five minutes about a really
quick subject. Kind of like an elevator speech.
This is a great way for Graduate and Senior Design Students to get
practice presenting their projects succinctly, so in particular,
you're encouraged to come along and bring your friends to get
feedback. The best way to know if you did a good job is to see if
anyone has any questions about your project during dinner. :)
Come along and tell us a story.
Barry Peddycord III
Secretary

Hello all,
Does anyone know if outgoing VNC connections are actively blocked on
the NCSU network?
I'm unable to connect to my VNC server on the desktop back home.
However, I am able to connect to the same server from other non-NCSU
external networks.
Has anyone had success with this?
(I'm trying to use my Raspberry PiBook as a thin client & remote
connecting to the desktop for MS office)
canyouseeme.org reports that port is open (even on the NCSU network)
Thanks,
Anand Bhatia

Perhaps the ports are blocked. I am not sure about vnc. But perhaps you can
use a VPN client?
http://oit.ncsu.edu/data-network/ncsu-ssl-vpn-instructions
With my Linux distro, CentOS 6, I had to add: setup-certs.tar.gz from this
web site:
http://oit.uci.edu/security/vpn/vpn-lin.html
Which were not in NCSU's instructions for Linux. But perhaps you won't need
those certs with your distro?
Hope that helps,

As promised, we'll be having another Hack Day this month! We'll be
meeting on Saturday, November 17 in Mann 301 for socializing and
hackery. We'll be starting at 11 AM and going on until 10 PM, so bring
whatever projects you're working on and share them with us. Maybe
you'll get helpful feedback, or maybe you'll just get laughed at - you
won't know unless you try!
There is no agenda, but we thought that after a long day of work, it
might be nice to unwind, so we're going to arbitrarily decide that at
8 or so, we should do some gaming. Bring a properly 3D-accelerated
laptop or old-fashioned board games if you'd like to participate.
RSVPs are desired, along with food preferences here:

See you there!

I will bring a router/WAP that we can use to network the PCs for gaming
and avoid the crappy Aruba wireless.
