To my knowledge (which may be lacking) to have interoperability with
iPhone apps requires a 3rd party, commercial, bit of software. Myself,
I have GroupWise delegate everything to my Google calendar and I have my
iPhone syncing with that.
You folks would probably be interested in the Student Email Initiative
report. In summary, it recommends students' migration to Google or
failing that an improved Cyrus IMAP in house system. The report is PDF:

The rumor mill has it that the UNC GA is negotiating with both Google
ans Microsoft (MS Live) at this time.
