The computing support group within the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, the PAMS Computing Organization [PCO] in conjunction with the Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences [MEAS], is seeking an individual with skills in maintaining various components of the computing environment primarily with Linux, but also including Windows, and other aspects of the environment within the College. For Linux this position will provide support for a compute cluster, Linux labs, and assist MEAS faculty with Linux based research computing. For windows support will include administrative desktop support and lab support. Other duties may include the support of backend systems, web development and maintenance, college helpdesk functions, consulting with faculty, support of departments, and direct end user support.
1.Support for Linux: The College is providing of Linux workstations within the labs and a high performance cluster for student use; these computers need systems support. MEAS has multiple researchers using Linux as a primary compute platform to pursue their research interests and grant requirements. Linux is the primary focus of the proposed position. As such the following skills are needed:
a.Beowulf support:
i.Advanced Linux Administration skills
ii.Advanced knowledge of RHEL/CentOS or Fedora
iii.RPM Packaging
iv.+ Participation in the Fedora Extras project a definite plus
v.Yum (RPM Auto updater) and/or up2date
vi.Linux Software RAID, LVM, NFS, quotas
vii.+ Familiarity of fiber channel a plus
viii.Kickstart (Automated installs of RHEL)
ix.Willing to learn SGE
x.Willing to learn Cisco switch basics
xi.Understanding of directory services (Hesiod, ldap, NIS)
xii.Experience maintaining a Linux Beowulf
xiii.Configuration management skills a plus
xiv.Automation of deploying software a plus
xv.MPI knowledge a plus
xvi.Apache configuration knowledge a plus
b.Lab Support:
i.Knowledge of RHRL/CentOS or Fedora; exposure to the NCSU Campus Linux Kit is a plus
ii.Knowledge of remote installs
iii.Trouble shooting skills
iv.Ability to work with end users
2.Research Support: Further clustered Linux machines are starting to appear within the research groups providing additional pressure on departmental systems administrators and increasing the need for second level support. Primary focus of the proposed position
i.Consultancy skills and the ability to communicate to end users
ii.Keep apprised of security vulnerabilities and the current level of implementation and assist researchers in maintaining systems with current patches.
iii.Implantation of various servers and services
iv.Automation and centralization of deployed services and servers
v.Task tracking software (remedy/bugzilla)
vi.Source code versioning systems (Subversion/CVS)
vii.Experience implementing disaster recovery / business cont. services and it’s impact on research projects
viii.Knowledge of Open GL graphics
3.Support for Windows - Support for administrative desktops within the College’s Dean’s Offices and Windows within MEAS is required. As a result, knowledge of Windows XP and Vista is important but not essential. Knowledge of Active Directory is a plus.

4.Departmental systems administrators have multiple platforms to support including Solaris, Win XP and Vista, and Linux. The level of expertise for these within the departments may require second level support that is partially available from the University but needs additional expertise within the college.

iii.Maintenance of all college systems
