No, there is read-write support for NTFS in linux.
Captive is a driver that runs in user space that uses the Windows driver to read
and write to NTFS partitions. See http://www.jankratochvil.net/project/captive/
I've also heard that the 2.6.15 kernel will also have full NTFS read/write
support.
