I have an R61i with an Intel GM965/GL960 running Gentoo. I'm not sure
how similar the cards are. I had some odd problems with black areas in
gnome that turned out to be drm turned off in the kernel.

I think you're asking about the installer CD though. I know for a while
the graphical installer was considered to be unusable, but I am unsure
of its current state. I haven't ever used a Gentoo graphical CD to
install; I have used the minimal cd, Knoppix, and a Ubuntu CD.
