I don't think symbolic or hard links are capable of initiating
connections or mounting file-system. Therefore, the target will not
exist simply by virtue of your having creating a link to it.. I may be
wrong, but I think this is correct.

I believe the easiest way to do this is to mount the file-system over
ssh. Such as using this tool:
