I started messing with my prompt in AIX 4.something back a dozen or so years ago. In that edition of ksh, you had to, or it wouldn't take.

I don't know.  I don't export it.  Try it for your situation and see?

But I'm trying to think /why/ it would be required?  The only program
that needs to know what it is would be your shell, right?  Does python
need to know?
