Dude, I have to give you some props for the really in-depth questions.  This one I dont know if even the developers have thought of.  Do you have any reference of someone else getting this working with gnome? (pics! woot)

Also, at this point i would ask how are your code-diving skills.  My weapons of choice are CScope and vim, with some unix-y commandline magic thrown in (grep/find/sort/wc/ls/and all the other fun 2-letter commands).
Mostly CScope though. It's saved my ass.
