OBJECTIVE: I'm trying to install Matlab2008b (from the OIT Software
website) onto a 64-bit RHELv5 installation.

I'm following the directions here:

After typing

# ./install

a Matlab graphical installer starts. I select "/usr/local/matlab" as the
root program directory. At the "Installation Options" screen, I can
select, among other platforms, "Linux (x86)" and "Linux (x86_64)". I
select "Linux (x86_64)". I click "OK" on the "Begin Installation?"
dialog box. The installer then gives me the following error:

"There was an error extracting the archives for MATLAB. Check that you
have enough disk space and rerun the installer."

There is ~200 GB of free space on the root partition. That's not the
problem. Even more puzzling, if I try the whole process over again but
install the 32-bit version ("Linux (x86)"), the install process works
fine. Anyone have an idea?

Thanks in advance,

Daniel
