Sorry about the confusion there, but you are right. It is dependent on
the hardware. Ethtools will not work with all of the ethernet drivers
out there. For those drivers you will have to use mii-tools.

If the interface is 1000base, you can be sure to use ethtools since mii-
tools will not support it. If you check the man on mii-tools it will
tell you that it is now obsolete.

NOTE
This program is obsolete. Valid media are only 100baseT4,
100baseTx-FD,100baseTx-HD, 10baseT-FD and 10baseT-HD ethernet
cards. For replacement check eth-tool.
